horn insert question

Does anyone know of a faster way to get horn to even thickness other than sanding it after it is flattened. I want to use it for my own war arrows, but I lack the 5 to 6 year apprenticeship common to the age these were state of the art.

Horn scrapes pretty good with a sharp blade, but seriously, I would just go over to my belt sander.
