I found a grove of HHB trees that are as good as I believe HHB gets. They live on my aunts place in abundance. I was walking back to my truck Saturday morning and decided to snap a few pics, the bow is 64" long for perspective. These are just a few of many like them. I got lazy and didnt cut this fall. I will have to wait now.

Those look great.  I wish I had a few growing on my place.  Make sure to post some pictures when you harvest those bad boys

Looks like some good, straight grained HHB Pearlie. I think you are set for life with the HHB unless you tick off your aunt.  ;)  Best be nice to her.

Kind of, but not really. Its more like a beech tree that thinks its osage. Its easily my second to osage. Its takes very little to make a bow and is strong in tension and compression, and isnt effected by humidity too bad.

Those are great looking trees.  I've found a number of place that had groves of HHB like that and was able to harvest many nice trees but the percentage of good straight grain trees was probably less than 5%, all the others had too much twist.  That first photo looks like a humdinger of a tree but from looking at the picture I do believe that it has a fair bit of right hand twist.  Still, if handled properly you could still make use of the wood to make many nice bows

 That is some darn good looking HHB trees. Mine around here never get that big around. 4 or 5" across is a big HHB tree around here. One of my top whitewood trees. They do make  great bows if you can get one to split halfway straight for you. Dean
