How bad is it?

Was applying heat to a section of limb to make a slight correction and my attention wandered.  The back is now lightly "toasted".



How bad is this?  I can probably sand off most of the dis-colored wood, but I am very concerned that I have now lost this osage's strength in tension on this spot.  I do not have enough wood to take off the growthring, either. 

I'm thinking scrape down this spot to plain yellow, back it with high quality rawhide and tiller with all fingers crossed. 

Oh, and the other marks on the wood are sawdust and pencil marks, not nicks/scratches/grain violations or the like.

I've done that a couple of times JW...  so far it hasn't been a problem???

Had that happen too, did what you're saying w/o problems.  What do you have to lose?  Slap some hide on'r and go with it ;)

I wouldnt use rawhide. Not because the stuff doesnt work, but I really dont think you need it. If you can just scrape lightly and get that off, it didnt go too deep. Also, where in the bend will that spot be? You can alter the limb profile and the therefore the tiller to control the stresses on that area as well. Lots of ways around this problem, which I think is small.

JW, I don't think thats a problem, I would sand it a little and go on. I've used osage before that was a victim of a 'forest fire' and it worked fine.

JW,

I have done similar toasting both accidental and purposely. That Osage is so clean, I would not worry about backing. How thick are your growth rings?

The only issue you will face is cosmetic.
