Yew character finished. Lots of pics sorry.
« on: October 07, 2012, 10:25:13 am »
Ayup all,

This is my latest yew character bow. Lumps bumps knots n all which made things fun  :o
Pulls about late 40`s at 27 which seems to be my new draw length.
It is 60 inches nock to nock with lightly flipped tips. Belly is flat at rest with the reflex in the tips lifted off the deck so little or no set which makes for a great string at brace tension.
Finish is Tru-oil which is a first for me and its great stuff. Very easy to apply and dries quick. Still needs another coat but it makes the wood look good enough to eat,,,well nearly. Will finish off with the wax finish my local smith recommended and let you all know what its like.
The handle is dyed veg tan with an arrow shelf slipped in. Thanks Keenan ;)
Looses and arrow very well. Cheers folks :)

Some big old knots in there  :o

FD bit off and the string nocked way to high but that was the end of my missus photographic patience.

Thanks for looking all.

Interesting bow.

It looks like it is mostly sap wood with only a little heartwood. It should be interesting to see if it holds up over time or if the belly crysals.

It looks to me like it was made from a small branch.  If that is the case, there is more heartwood there than meets the eye.
That is a beauty Dwardo!  Well done sir!  Josh

Thanks chaps.

It was made from a small sapling that was shaded out. There is only a thin layer of sapwood the rest is heartwood must have been very slow growing.

Could be. Yew is fairly easy to get here in the Pacific Northwest, so I have never worked with small diameter staves.

It certainly is lovely. I really like yew character bows with all the bumps, knots and kinks.

That is Excellent Dwardo, all the way through!!!!

Looking at the tips shows the sap to heart ratio and it looks perfect to these old eyes and the grip is very cool.... What's not to like :)

That is seriously gorgeous... just gotta love that toffee and cream look.
Lve the nocks, clean simplicity, that's what we love.
I'll bet she spits out the arrows too.
Looks similar to my Twister which pulls about 47#, great style of bow for field shooting.
Great bow.
