Ocean Spray Bow (Finely Done!)

Ok guys, i got the Ocean Spray bow completed! Actually it was 'done' for a while, i just needed to freshen up the tiller after it sat in my shop and dried out more, besides doing the handle and finish work. All in all, this was a very easy bow to make. It shoots very fast and smooth. My hay bales don't stand a chance  ;D I decided to leave the bark on because i think it looks cool, however it cracked off somewhere around the lower tips, so i had to take some off.

Stats:
70#25"
52" ttt
Came from 3/4" shoot

The first pic is of the bow when i had posted it in 'Ocean Spray Experiment.' The only changes that have been made are finish work and to the drawlength, back then it was lighter do to less drying time.

It definitely did take a lot of set, (that's right after i shot about 100 arrows) However it does not effect the shooting at all, so i have left it alone. If it had been a sluggish shooter i definitely would have changed it, but it goes right through a tight, heavy bale, (probably a 75 pounder) so I don't have guilt  ;D

guess your right! i figure if its fast enough its fine, performance in speed isnt everything in fact its better to have a slower bow that shoots dead center of where you look.

I really like it. The tiller looks great, maybe the overall dimensions and the wood not being qutie dry when you first started pulling it contributed to the excessive set. If you had'nt shown the unbraced pic one would never had known. I think you did a great job on it and the bark on looks cool. Maybe next time you can wait till its fully cured. That will be a bow to see.   Danny

Nice lookin bow there Zion. Who cares if it's got some set! If it shoots fine, than shoot the snot out of it, and go make some meat with it.

Thanks people! Since this bow shoots really well i don't care about the set as i mentioned earlier, i don't tend to  fuss over aesthetics if it performs well. But i also understand that a bow with less set out-performs bows with more set, so i will experiment and clamp an OS blank into some reflex. We shall see what the difference is. I let this stick season about 8 or 9 months, but then again i am impatient and thinking about letting a stave sit for 2 years seems crazy to me, by then i would be a sophomore  ;D Maybe when i'm retired in 50+ years.  ;)

WoW Z, that's a nice little shooter! Guess I don't need to tell you about OS, you've already done it ;D Os does take a little set but like you said it doesn't seem to affect the shooting too much. You'd be amazed what a heat treating would do to that thing. Doesn't look like you heat treated it already and it might surprise you how much of that set you can heat treat away. It will add poundage though and that thing is already 70lbs. I can't pull 70# today much less when I was your age. I hate it when the bark pops off too but I like the look of yours with the tips exposed. Great job!

Very nice tiller and good looking bow, I doubt the set came from the tillering it looks to good it probably came for still not being dry enough,  I am sure it's a sweet shooting bow. Nice Job. :)

Zion, I love to see your posts! You turn out some mighty fine bows and at your age, amazing! I love to see you youngsters with so much zeal for this craft! Keep it up! It does us old guys good to see your work!

If you heat treat some reflex, that set will disappear.

Very nice bow! Bends real nice.

Dale, your right, i do buck some hay. I also wrestle so i need to work out a lot to stay in shape.

Bryce, on my next OS bows i intend to do that, both to see how much of a difference in shooting it makes and also to see how well i can heat-treat OS.
