Rawhide backed maple
« on: September 23, 2007, 11:28:35 pm »
Just finished a rawhide backed maple bow, 66" 50#@28". This was the first time I used rawhide, wanted to give it a try, the bow had really nice grain and it probably didn't need it, but I wanted this bow to be bullet proof. the stain was light with poly to accent the grain it is a honey color. I really love maple, it is by far my local wood of choice. There was a little twist to the limbs that I heat bent out, the back was left plain and if you've seen my other bows you know I like to paint them up with various art, but the person I made it for requested it to be plain so he could adorn it himself .  This bow needs no string silencers since it is whisper quiet, man made leather grip, leather strike plate and arrow rest. I was plugging bullseyes the first time it was strung and shot.

Great looking maple bow.  The rawhide makes a great canvas for his artwork.  Justin

Damn fine lookin bow VB! Notice you have some white and translucent spots on your rawhide - what method did you use to clean up the deer hide (if it is deer)?

Thanks everyone, cowboy, I got the rawhide from someone so I don't know what was done to it, finnish native, I heat bend some reflex into it before backing so I guess that is similar to heat treating. Makete there are some pics here to show you the belly.
