Ka-pow
« on: August 24, 2012, 07:18:02 pm »
Severely disappointed to say the least. 64" ntn, 52# @ 27", 50th draw, dead nutz tiller. It weighed 16.1 oz and was 1 3/16" wide, rounded belly, short bottom limb. Which coincedentley was the limb that blew. Not happy right now.............gimme some osage before I blow, Long live the king!!!

It really hurts when everything looks good just before Kapow. The sting will wear off in a day though. Best remedy is finishing a bow that works.

Don't give up on Yew though. The species is sure as hell not what made this blow. Must a been a bad apple.

Sounds like you need to work with more white woods.   >:D

Tough break, literally.  We all seemed pretty interested to see what came of this wood.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Ohhhhhhh Noooooo!  That bow was looking good the other day.  Would rawhide backing have maybe saved it from Ka-pow?

That does, however, look like it was a spectacular explosion!

Hey PEARL, was that the upper limb?  The one we talked about taking more set? (stress)  Just wondering?

Anyway get whittling on that ash stave, that one wont blow.

I dont think so Darryl, the whole limb just went and FAST. I wasnt at full draw yet so it just clipped my face going by.

My guess is that the bow didn't have enough mass for what you were asking of it. Did it take much set before blowing?

Dont know Ryan. I never unbraced it before it blew so I have no idea how much set it had taken. It was straight when I braced it.

Ah. Well I'm not the most knowledgable about mass calculations but my guess is that it should have been around 18.5oz. I know Steve (Badger) says yew often comes in under mass but I think 2.5 oz would be a bit much.
