It's in the bag
« on: August 19, 2012, 03:58:55 pm »
Made a new bag for the .62 cal smoothbore flintlock I picked up this summer.  Either that or I love making custom leather purses for myself.

This bag is lined with pillow ticking that I died red.  I did a ticking wrap around the raw edges of the flap and the opening of the bag.  That took huge amounts of time to do, but makes the bag look much nicer.

The bag is basically shaped like the body of a guitar.  Then a second piece the shape and size of the lower half is added.

Now for the interior view:

Brown wool material lines the interior of the flap closure.  There is a small pocket sewn against the backside of the pillow ticking liner.  A small tab with a button closure helps keep small items from being lost in the depths of the bag. Detail of small pocket below:

And lastly, a detail photo of the antler button closure.  A thong attached underneath the bag wraps twice around the button to secure the flap nice and tight.  With the high degree of overlap, this is a very secure bag to carry.  No worries of stuff falling out.  Especially if the bag is worn "high and tight" up under the upper arm and against the ribs where it belongs.  Down around the hip bounces it around and it just gets in the way all the time.

I have a second one started.  That one will have a brown linen liner, and I think it might have a green canvas wrap around the raw edges of the leather.

Nice work, John. Is it hand stitched?  I love leatherwork and hand stitching especially.

Yup, every bloody last stitch in that sucker is hand done!  A while back I had posted a request for linen thread to stitch up a project....well, this was the project.

Red wool blanket sleeve.  Came with the gun.

I am starting a new bag at this time with the same general style.  I have begun photographing the various steps so that when it is finished there will be a build-along.  At the rate in which I get things done, you should start looking for this buildalong in mid-September.....2015!
