Outbound 2012 Trade Bow
« on: August 12, 2012, 12:57:48 am »
Well Here she is Fellas...

This has been the Most Confounding bow for me to date.
I stopped counting the Heating Sessions after thirty.
Initially Steam, which did not work for this stick, and finally Many Heat Gun sessions.
Basically what worked in the end, sort of, would be to get her setup in the jig,
heat her up with the heat gun like I was toasting, as color started to show, make my correction.
I used Tung Oil coats while I was heating the wood to keep it from drying out too much.
All of which was sanded off later.

She's got two pass through knots and one more that did not quite make it all the way through.
I filled the Pith holes and the short knot hole with Green Turquoise from the Kingman Mine in Arizona.
The horn overlays and the arrow pass are American Bison, cut from the tip of a single horn.

The tiller is far from perfect.
I had to lean hard on a good thickness taper with the weird reflex/deflex parts in each limb.
The Heat resistance coupled with funky knot placement really kept me from straightening her out more than I did.
She started out with 1 1/2" of reflex and wound up almost flat at rest.
Just unstrung she shows 1 1/2 inches of string follow but relaxes to about even.

Bottom Line:
I apologize to the group and Mr. (@*!&#@!) for this bow being so late in shipping.
I hope it makes it to you safely and serves you well.

Particulars:
Pacific Dogwood
68.5" NtN
Limbs Parallel all the way out, tapering the last eight inches to 1/2" nocks.
56# @ 28"
12 strand B-50 string.
Got 125 arrows through her before starting the finishing process.
No Chrono, but she does thump em deep.
Ten coats of Tru Oil.
Kangaroo Leather grip wrap and Lace.

Here are the Pics:

I'll try to get a Full Draw up tomorrow.
She will ship Monday.
Thanks for looking.

I like the look of that bow Gus. The turquoise inlays look cool with that wood color. With 30 + heat sessions it must have been a stubborn piece of wood but you did a beautiful job on it.

Whoever that recipient is shouldn't mind at all waiting for that jewel!! ;D

I was just thinking about you and that bow last night.  Was wondering how it was going......knew you were working hard on it.  Very nice to say the least.  A super good looking bow that I am sure is well worth the wait for the lucky recipient.
Happy hunting to all!

Thank You Fellas,

I really do like this bow...
But I'll sure be Happy, and a little sad to see her go.

Got another stave of Pacific Dogwood I picked up at the same time as this one.
Hopefully it will go a little smoother, taking into account everything I learned building this bow.
I will be using the Heat Gun from the start, no more steam... and use quite a bit more corrective deflection
when bending, than I would for other types of wood.

But now I have quite a few other staves prepped and ready to work on.
As I would hit the wall in frustration working on the Dogwood, I would set it aside pull out a raw stave and chase a ring, do a lay out, or
rough out a bow.

So I'm guessing it will be a while before I get back to Dogwood... :)

Boy, that's a pretty one, Gus. I looked like a challengeing piece of wood.

Nice bow! I never had that much issue with Pacific dogwood, and hope to not run into one!

That turquoise is amazing, and it makes me wanna look for a stave with holes in it

Thank You mullet.
I'm a sucker for pass through knot holes.
And it looked a lot straighter before I skinned the bark off her.  :)

I hear ya vinemaplebows, this bow would take a bend and I'd think "Thank Goodness I finally got what I needed."
I'd leave her in the caul over night, then take her out and let her rest a day.
Then the next day I'd take a look and she'd lost 2/3's of the correction, or more...  ???
Finally started over correcting a lot more than I thought she needed, and
leaving her clamped down for 24 hours after last heat. And she finally started
coming around. :)

Thank You Youngboyer2, I do love the Turquoise.
This it the third bow I've put it on, though I've been using it on other wood projects for about five years.

Okay, here is the full draw.
The dog leg is in the upper limb just out of the fade.
