My 1st stave bow (2012 trade bow)
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:38:08 pm »
This was my 1st stave bow I have attempted. It is a Hackberry bend through the handle made for Gus.  53# @ 27". 63" ttt and 61 1/2" ntn.  I left the back with some cambium on it in spots trying for a slight camo effect.  Stained with special walnut stain and finished with 6 coats of Helmsman spar urethane.  Beaver tail grip with a built up leather rest under it.  B-50 string with beaver fur silencers. It shot where I was looking and had just a little thump in the handle at the shot.  It is very light in the hand.  Overall I was very happy with this bow. This bow is a bit shorter than my 30" draw but I could still shoot it well.  I am glad that Gus likes it.

Happy hunting to all!

That's a good looking bow, James. Especially for a first time stave. The beaver really sets it off.

In one word, PERFECT.
"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

That's a real looker! I think I'd have a hard time giving away my first stave bow though (which has yet to be completed after slowly chipping away at it for over a year now... ;) )

That sucker is spot-on! It is bows like this that cause me to disfigure many a stave. I absolutely love that bow.

I hope my first stave bow turns out that good!  That handle is AWESOME!
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?

Thanks folks......it was a joy making it and I learned a good bit in the process.  Del it was similar in the design to a ELB just a good bit shorter.  The belly was slightly rounded all the way.  Hackberry is some very sweet wood.  I loved working it......scraped so good.  Also the stain I used showed the grain so well.  I really liked the beaver tail myself, and yes it was tough to give a away but I rest well knowing it is in good hands.

Thanks again to all

Man, I love those bendy handle D bows.  You did a great job.

If that bow showed up on my porch, I'd be jumping up an down while I grabbed some arrows and head to the range for the rest of the afternoon/evening.
