corn silk?

I doubt it. I think you would be better off using the husk. BUT, with all the good backing materials out there, I wouldn't use either.

Backing material needs to be strong in tension to make any difference in performance or protection. How strong is a piece of corn silk when you pull on each end? Not very.

  All  plant materal detearates with time. Even when water proffed.  Plus there's not much strenth there anyways.
