Wow look what was delivered to me yesterday!
« on: June 11, 2012, 06:44:31 am »
No it's not a bow! Atleast not yet! So awhile back I showed a bow I made to a couple I'd just met and they asked if I've ever tried Osage and I told them no I'd love to but it doesnt grow around here they said it grows around them and they would get me a log so I told them what I'd need and never really thought they'd come through but yesterday this was dropped off at my house.

It was a pretty hot day to be splitting wood but I'd never been so excited about it and to think this guy that just met me went out and cut this sealed the ends and drove it over three hundred miles to me and of course he wouldn't take a dime for it. Amazing! I ended up with 11 staves and a couple could prolly be split again.

Most of them are pretty nice looking though the top ones look a little gnarly

A pile of Osage and ironwood! Oh and two sugar maples.

Judo:  Good for you!  As you say, it was a little hot for splitting osage yesterday.  I also split some.  Had to stop at the top of the heat and get back to it later in the afternoon when it cooled down to 85. There wasn't enough water in the hose to quench my thirst.

Good score!  Looks like some good straight stuff with almost no twist.  It should make some fine bows.  If you leave the bark on them make sure to spray them with some bug spray every now and then.  Did you seal the backs of the belly splits?
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Thanks everyone and yes outlaw I sealed the backs of the belly splits with Elmers glue and I sprayed the ones with the bark on with bug spray that is supposed to kill up to 12 weeks. I'm pretty excited to try this yeller stuff! There doesn't seam to be any real snakey stuff but there is one with a nice hole in the center that I'm pretty excited about.

Wow, that was a nice gesture!  Besides the gas expense they expended some real energy dropping, moving, loading and cleaning up the mess from cutting that tree.  Good luck with it.

You must've made quite an impression on those folks for them to do that.  It speaks well of you and them!  Josh

What a heck of a guy. You know you gotta make em a bow now,  ;D.
"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

You need to seal the Belly of the Back spits as well.
Also, Reseal the ends all the way around up at least 4 inches.

I use old latex paint.  It looks terrible.  But it can be picked up for free at construction sites.
You can also pick up Returned paint a Lowes, Home Depot and other places that sale paint for next to nothing.  I put two layers of paint on.  Let the first layer dry quite well ( At least two days ) before you put the second layer on.
