hide glue
« on: May 30, 2012, 10:48:37 am »
Could I have some input on what is considered the best and strongest hide glue available commercially in granular form?  Also, where it can be purchased.

Thanks

I've never bought hide glue, but several people on here say Knox gelatin is really good and inexpensive. You can get it at the grocery store.
If I knew what I was doing, I'd probably be bored with it, and I wouldn't be here.

Just go the the grocery store and buy Knox unsweetened gelatin. Comes in granular form and is as clean as you can get.

My only experinece is with the real deal. I get mine from "MWiricki". The sack contains enough granuals to easily do 3-4 bows with 3-4 layers each, maybe more? Ive lost count and still have half a sack full. I never degrease and never had it peel off...............yet.

I've read that the clearer the granules, the stronger and purer the glue. Some hide glues, but especially bone glue, can be really brown. Try to avoid this and get the most transparant stuff.

I buy Rabbit skin glue granules from the local artist supply store. Makes a strong glue with a very light (almost clear) amber color.

I've used knox gellatin with good results.  Save your sinew scraps and try making your own glue.  Whatever you use, make sure to degrease the back of your bow properly  ;)
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left
