Spent a little time in the shop knapping tonight while the osage/cedar bow was cooling off after being heat bent.  First I reduced a nice Keokuk chunk to gravel.



I put that in for Leslie.  I normally don't post too many broken points.  I tried to make a point from both halves and botched both.

Then, I took a spall I knocked off that keokuk chunk and made a point.  Really have trouble thinning this rock.  Doesn't act like Texas flint at all.  It's pretty small, just over 3/4" wide, but thick enough to be 120gr.



Then I made my first real attempt at punch notching.  I couldn't pull off an andice, but I got pretty deep notches before I broke off an ear and made a stemmed point.  I'm gonna like punch notching.

Bummer on the broke blade George but high fives on the points :)!! Ya know, maybe you should go with simple triangular points for awhile with shallow side notches. I found those to be the easiest and most gratifying point to make and the more you make the easier it will become. Great hunting points too. Just a thought :).

While the snakeskin was drying on my trade bow I sat down to break some rock.  Reached down and picked up the rhyolite preform I pooped out on the other day.  I got it thin enough to make a point, but could not pressure flake it with the ishi.  So, this one is done completely with percussion, first direct and then indirect.  Had one errant hit with the bopper that made the base too narrow for a point, so it became a little knife blade.  I am surprised it worked, I really am.  I have never hit rock as hard as I did today.  Not a particularly pretty blade, but I'm gonna haft it up anyway. :)

Nice Cryolite point, George. That stuff makes some tough hunting points.

   MULLETS right they are tuff points I used them. There perry muck unbkaeable.

I really like working Ryolite so hard and forgiving most of the time. Nice work.

Nothing wrong with that one. Tough enough to skin and bone a deer without worrying too much about it breaking..
