traveling workbench/toolbox

While at the Classic, I looked around and checked out all the benches.  I tried a shaving horse and it worked good for removing wood from the back or belly, but not so good for working on the sides of the limbs or the nocks.  I liked the benches with the vice mounted on them.  When I got home I decided to build a small bench I could take with me different places.  I go to my inlaws cabin on a lake most weekends I'm off work and it would be nice to be able to work on a bow while I'm there.  I wanted it keep my tools in it also.  This is what I came up with.  I spent around $20 in lumber.  I used some scrap pieces and hinges that I already had.  It isn't as heavy as it looks.  I have no problem moving it even when loaded with tools.  I want to drill some holes for a string jig sometime down the road when I figure out the measurements.  I need a bigger vise too.  This one is kind of on the small side.

Mullet,  go right ahead.  You probably don't need to make it as sturdy as mine.  You aren't near as thick as I am   


I'll probably bring this to the Classic next year to use.  I kind of felt guilty taking up a bench when there were so many first timers trying to make a bow.

That is really nice ...did you do much reinforcement for the vice? Very handy layout for the internal storage

The vise is mounted to a piece of 2x8.  It is mounted to the bench with 6 long screws.

You will have to bolt your bench to a floor to get the maximum use out of it. My work bench probably weighs in excess of 300lb fully loaded. I can move it from point A to point B when I am into some serious drawknifing.

  If he is sitting on the bench while he draw knives it won't move. My shaving mule weighs only about 30# and I draw knife all the time on it. If I use the bench attached to my shed while standing the whole shed wants to move.
