Ipe recurves - the patch brothers.
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:20:03 pm »
As usual I don't have full draw pics yet.  I'm home alone.  these two bows were about pushing the abilities of Ipe to take the R/D shape and Recurve the ends of a bow.

Future R/D bows of this design will have shallower limbs.  This would probably be a Recurve technicaly as the string touches the belly when strung.  I just finished the patch and don't want to string it yet till I get on the tree and look the tiller over with a long string first.
This bow will be mine as I observe the patch performance.  It was pushing 70# at 28"  It is 68" long Tip to Tip.

The recurve I'm going to change.  I don't need as deep or as long of a recurve on the ends of the bow.  That will give me more working limb and a bit more length in the bow.  It is a bend in the handle because it became clear that with this material combination anyway 28" would not be posible with a fixed riser.  Arrow shelf if Pear wood.  Belly is ipe and the white wood under the bamboo is Hickory.  This was  areal tillering victory for me for a few reasons.  I got it back to 29", and removed some grain induced limb twist through the tillering process.  I finaly got my head around what is going on there.  Oh the core needs to be thinner also in future versions.  This is 65#ish at 28" and 58" Nock to nock.  The black wraps actualy hold down a pair of lifted fibers on the lower limb at the fades in the bamboo.  One went all the way into the hickory core.  I flexed it open and soaked it with super glue then unstrung the bow and clamped it closed.  Then I checked it on the tiller tree at full draw again and it seemed to be holding but I wrapped it with B-50 anyway.  Not certain what I'll do with this bow.  I owe one to my brother who just bought a kayak also.

The R/D bow has my Torges patch in it.

The real victory is the amount of limb twist I tillered out of the recurve.

Thanks guys!
I turned my nose up at bend in the handle bows when I started.  Now I love them.  Not a problem one with them.

Great job on both of those, Scott. I'm beginning to really like the kerf splices. Really nice curves on those babies!!

That recurve has me eyeing my ipe lams... We'll see if hand sawn kerf recurves are doable.

Nice job :)
What were you putting that torges patch over?

I tried to patch another close suspect area and the patch failed.   :'(  Oh well.  I pushed the envelope on what I think I can do with Ipe.  Now lets build some real bows.
