Christmas Bow/Arrow set for my baby
« on: December 25, 2012, 06:17:17 pm »
Merry Christmas y'all!!!  While the Texas blizzard blows outside, i figured it'd be as good a time as any to post the bow i made for my oldest daughter (my 13 year old baby;).  She decided she wanted a bow for Christmas (finally!), and she showed me a pic of a pretty drastic recurve.  I told her i'd get as close as i could.

My first osage bow (to finish).  First full recurve bow (osage bent NICELY with dry heat!).  Nothing super special as bows go, but special to somebody :D

Thanks to those who helped me tweak the tiller.  Still ain't perfect but perfect enough for a youth bow.

Specs:
20#@24" (probly drawable out to 28"or so which would put'r round 30#, so she's got some growing room)
54" ntn (i think!)
Mild pyramid taper with slight thickness taper.
Pin nocks (first time to cut those string grooves along the belly, easier than i thought they'd be)
Osage (which just might BE king!! ;))

The handle was a little shy on wood after being worked down past the digouts and splits, so i built it up with leather and an exotic skin over it (kinda blocky, not super happy with it, but she likes it and it fits her hand).

Enjoy, critiques are welcome!

Oh!!  AND this my first set of matching arrows from scratch (well, 5/16 poplar dowels anywho).

The cant makes the tiller look off.  I will say the brace pic looks a touch backards (aka negative tiller) cuz the upper limb has a touch of reflex and the lower a touch of deflex.  After all the heating and rastlin i had to do to get it tillerable, i decided to leave that alone.

Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Thanks George, hope you're enjoying the snow!

Thanks Weylin!

Lol thanks Pearl.  I've got more sage in the garage all cured up and waitn on me to rastle it into submission  (not to mention that one i started with George forever ago!)::)  We'll call this one good practice, and it don't sting one bit (long as she shoots till the string falls to pieces ;))

Yes we did Soy, it's been a nice one.  My wife got me bowyers bibles 2 and 4 (YES!!).  Interestingly the cover of TBB II has a sage bow that looks like the big brother of this one, upper limb knot and all!  Thanks again :)

Appreciate it half-eye.  That's what i told her!

thanks Rob, she is indeed pretty zippy!

Forgot to tell y'all this was from a gnarly, rotten standing dead osage tree a student cut down for me.  Nearly every square inch of the surface had rot or a borer hole, and they went deep, and the outer 1" of wood was paper thin rings.  This was about all that was left by the time I worked down to some decent rings.

Yup, osage is good stuff!
