ERC ELB Finished Videos added... a trubute to Grandpa Newt
« on: March 23, 2012, 08:42:22 pm »
During this build I found a new respect for you ELB builders. The "D" shaped cross section and slight bend at the handle were very hard for me but this piece of ERC if there is such a thing was perfect so here it is.

It's 67 51@27...  I was going to use the horn from an antelope I took in the 70's but it had some issues that made me believe it wasn't trustworthy. In stead I use some Stag (Mule deer) for the tips and rest...  I wrapped the handle in braided hemp and put rawhide on the back. The back is finished (rawhide is pretty plain) with a coat of pecan stain and while still wet and application of dark espresso. The wet application caused the grain effect.

My daughter started getting interested in ancestry a while back and has traced our family back a long ways. A couple of years ago she gave me this Coat of Arms. It's supposed to be ours??? Anyway here's my version of an ELB with the Newton Coat of Arms :)

Thank you guys

A little side note...  My Grandfather Newton (everyone called him Newt) was a whittler...  He made almost all of his tools and I have a small collection of his carvings and I have a few of his tools. Since he died in the first year of my life these are 65  to 80 years old. This the first time I ever used his tools. I used his little gouges to inlay the  stag striker plate...anyway I thought it was kind of cool :)

Some of Newt's stuff...

Very nice looking stick. Well done!
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

That is a very cool ELB, Kip. You did a beautiful job of dressing her up too.  8)

Does the coat of arms mean you are the Duke of Milk Bones?  ;D

Wonderful job Kip!!!  You make a fine looking bow.
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

Dang Kip, you are kicking out some nice bows. That is a great looking bow. Looking forward to the full draw as well. Love the finish on the back. Great idea. ;)

Darn if that isn't a dandy right there! I have a 72" ERC stave seasoning and you may have just inspired the bow inside that stave. Very well done!

I'm with you AMH. I have a well seasoned, fairly clear ERC stave from a friend that passed away a few years ago. It would make Tom B proud! An ELB would be the perfect bow for Tom's stave.  8)
