oak bow from tree?

I see folks make board bows from oak.  Can oak bows be made from a tree, using the outer ring as the back, or does that not work with oak?  There are a lot of large oaks that get cut down around here and are available for "firewood'.

...just be sure the tree hasn't been laying on the ground. During the summer it doesn't take fungi long to invade a log that is laying on the ground. :o     Pat

If theres a choice, look for white oak.  Flat, scaly light gray bark
