cedar tip overlays

just curious if anyone has tried cedar for tip overlays.....seems it would be too soft...but i have beeen surprised before with erc  so im thinking the fibers may compress and actually be pretty tough...   its such an un-usual wood i dont know what is to be expected of it anymore

Good question. I have a ton of white cedar trim around and thought some of the sections would make a cool overlay.

Ive thought of using my scraps for overlays too,but always shy away from doing it. Maybe use it as a bottom piece with a hard wood on top where the string actually grooves in? That way its protected from the highest point of pressure,and the string wouldnt actually be touching it much where it matters most

Since I've seen horn and snakewood overlay "snap in half" at the string groove, I use nothing but the densest woods. I like skinny tips, narrower than ½", so there's not much wood to hold my string in place. I need it to hold, and not worry about the string denting the overlay. WRC is way too soft for me liking. I would have to compensate the weak wood by making my limbtips much wider - not desirable for me.

 I just put cedar on a bow that I'm working on. They shaped really nice with ease.

I cut some real nice red cedar just for tip overlays once. It was real pretty but it splits very easily. It made me nervous having all that pressure from the string bearing down into it, so I never used it again.

i would not use cedar as the top overlay, but i've got some manzanita that i'm gonna use, beautyfull, and hard, Bub

The bow I put them on is 53@27. I was nervous at first about them being too soft I got my grooves cut deep and the finish is hard......I think they'll be fine. I'll post a picture later
