My new tool... Hitched!!!
« on: March 13, 2012, 06:48:19 pm »
So after my divorce and selling of my house I am in the process of looking for another. With the lack of room now my work benches are in storage and I can only work on my bows when I get the opportunity to use a local school shop at nights. With warm weather hitting NH I figured I needed a way to hold a stave so that I could work outside on my bows... Here is what I came up with this weekend....

This was made out of 2x2 square tubing 1/4 thick... with a 10x10 1/4 thick steel plate on top.
I am no way shape or form a metal working machine but for about $60.00 and a weekend my brother who works in automotive repair helped me turn this cool tool out in a weekend... Now when I teach my bowhunter education courses i can bring some equipment to the class and show some of the students who continually ask me how I make my bows some of the steps... Maybe have some students get into bow making and hook a few more into this great craft... Hope you enjoy!!!

That is very cool! Great idea. I was trying to figure out how to have a vice with my ridgeline and that solves it. Thanks!!
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

Forgot to mentioin that when the vice is placed in the hitch there is a slight bit of play.... I just put two shims on each side which are on my bumper and the play is taken out.. I think I will add two washers to each side when my brother can weld them on and that will assist with the very little tilt when the vice is turned

A wise man would fab up a detachable tiller tree............
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Very Cool! you could mount a jack stand to the bottom to really stiffin it up for hogging off wood. The tiller tree idea sounds good 2 Pearlie  ;)  All in all what you made is AWESOME!!! Good job  ;)

Tonight my brother stopped by to see how the whole thing worked out... I showed him the little play in it and he said we could fix that real quick... Out came the welder and some banding steel... about an hour later there is no play in the thing and it is tight as hell... will touch up the paint in the morning and grease where the vice goes into the reese.... then its time to chase a ring!!!
