Very nice hickory stave
« on: March 04, 2012, 11:18:44 pm »
I have a very nice,straight,knot-free hickory stave I have been carting around for about five years.I have kept it in the house with me and have often picked it up and wondered what the best design would be for a hickory bow out of this piece of wood. I want to make an un-backed bow out of it and put it into BOM. I have some ideas for the finish, but not what the best, fastest, strongest most reliable bow design. What do you guys think ?  '  Frank

I like my flat, pyramid style hickory bow. it is 1 3/4" wide at the fades tapering to pretty small and narrow tips (can't recall off hand how small) The belly is super flat, I think that is key with hickory's poor compression and excellent tension.

How about a Sudbury bow?

I also like Weylin's design,Maybe not quite that wide unless I want a pretty heavy bow.About 1 5/8 tappered to the 3/8 or less at the tips 66 n-n will make a 50 + @
26/27 inch draw pretty easy. Smooth/sweet shooting bows. :)

Depends what weight and draw you want and what you want it for.
Do you want to take it through the brush or stand with a band of brothers facing massed ranks of French Knights?

Thanks fellas for the ideas. I'm wanting a Bullet proof (Yeah, right) hunting bow and not too overly long, that pulls in the range of 50 to 55 lbs. I am not an accomplished bowyer by any stretch,I have managed to break every bow I've made for myself.I have a strong desire to head that way though. I am gearing up and plan on really working on it this summer.  Thanks again,(I need all the help I can get)  '  Frank

Sparrow,
You ever read 'The Bent Stick' by Paul Comstock? I would recomend you do if you have not. I think there is a design in there that would do what you are wanting.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.
