A sinew experiment

Last night at work I was looking at Pearlys exchange bow post about adding the racing stripe of sinew down the middle.  Something clicked in my small brain.  DYED SINEW!  I PM'd Pearly and we tossed around a couple of ideas.  This morning I picked up some food coloring and a box of knox.  I just finished experimenting with it on a piece of scrap hickory.  I added the food coloring to the pan of water that I rehydrate the sinew in.  I added 24 drops in about an inch of water.  I tried green, red, and blue.  Pearly suggested a camo scheme of green and brown would look cool.  The colors will show up better on whitewoods.  I was thinking or mixing up a yellow/orange color to use on osage so it would blend in for a while until the osage darkened.  I guess RIT dye would work too.  I know this isn't very primitive, but it is interesting.  As it dries over the next couple of days I'll post some pictures to see how the color looks.

I was wondering about some of the sinew wrap colors seen lately on PA... with dyeing the stuff in mind.
You have gone for the sinew dyeing jugular... :)

You could make dyed sinew thread and cordage for strings and what not.

I guess the colors are a little bright  :)  I just used the colors straight out of the box.  Maybe some more natural shades would look better

I can't remember who it was, but there was a post here about using natural dye stuff to dye sinew.  Berries and such.   He was rehydrating the sinew in the dye solution and then dipping in glue. The colors were not as bright, but had a primitive look.     Ron

Normal finger color  ;D  It really didn't dye them any.  Pearly suggested I get some gloves, but I forgot. 

I want to do a paddle style NA bow with red sinew and then paint some black designs on top of it.

Thats an awesome idea. It really coulda been done primitive - style back in the day by some creative person with enough real fine red okra powder, probably?

You can just use natural dyes in water as your glue base. It was Jim Welch who mentioned using various berry and plant dyes.
 I would think any concentrated pure fruit juice would work.

it will look cool if done right...do you guys remember my fugly sinewed HHB bow where i dyed my stripe of sinew...let me find a link to it as i dont have it anymore
