Rob look for a piece of maple with the same grain as you look for in a RO board...Pick a few out and take the one that feels the heaviest....= more dense..Hard maple is a term used to describe many kinds of maple that are  " Harder" or more dense

Looks like Chris has got you on the right track. Haven't got to meet you yet because I have been doing some mentoring myself. Your tiller looks great and the cave drawings are Cool.... looking forward to meeting you in the future
