Rattan Bow

This is my 'loaner' bow. Rattan, 63"ttt, 35# @ 27". It lifted a splinter on the skin last year. Where it had been hit with something sharp. That is what the 'patch' is for on the limb.






Also one of my rattan staves. 68" x 1.75"




Not the best bow wood by any means, but darn near unbreakable.

Gotta like them Rattan Bows...

Dean Torges has a place listed on his web site for Rattan.
Bamboo and Rattan Works, up in New Jersey I believe.
I ordered a couple of pieces from them a month or so ago.
They cut it to order.
Wound up with enough stock for Four kids bows and One 50+# adult bow.
Good looking stuff...
Now I just need to wag a bunch of projects (including the Rattan) over to a buddies shop to run it all through his bandsaw.

That may be the answer for me to get some bows in the hands of some kids in my neighborhood that see me working in my shop. I thought I read somewhere that you could split the bamboo and string it backwards? The pics of this one look like the outside is the back.

Rattan is different than bamboo. Bamboo is a grass, rattan is a member of the palm family.

This stuff is great for kids bows. quick and easy to make, will allow more leaway in growing kids drawing further.

It is also (in my opinion) a better choice for beginners that red oak. You really have to mess up bad to not get a bow out of it.

No, it is petty narrow, even at it's bigest piece.

Dean Torges recommends Bamboo and Rataan works out of New York. Is that where you get yours, or do you have a local place that carries it? I wouldn't mind getting a couple of pieces of it, but don't really want to order 20 pieces which looks like their minimum order. The price is not too bad but the shipping would probably be a killer.
