firewood
« on: February 09, 2012, 09:51:29 pm »
So I bid on a few staves on ebay.  Two shorter 49" ones and one that was 64".  I had the guy cut the 64 incher at 32.5 and was going to make a take down from it.  I then had it shipped to a guy who is coming to visit me in Thailand next week.  I wrote asking to keep it as his second piece of luggage or leave it in chicago and I'll get it another time if he couldn't bring it.  Here's the email I got today from him :(....  Guess I will have some riser wood.

Hey Randy,
The firewood arrived. Are you using it to smoke meat? It is too long to go as luggage so I cut it in half and it all fits right into a suitcase.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

well hopefully I can make a kids take down or splice in the handle for 2 kids bows.  49" cut in half would be 24" each and maybe he didn't cut my 32.5 " and 31.5" pieces in half.  That's the one that bums me out the most as it was a nice looking piece.

Maybe a 3 piece bamboo backed osage take down with the 24" pieces.

Not to make light of your situation, but, I noticed every time I google "osage orange", thinking I might run across a great source for bow making material, I get all these sites that sell pen blanks.... That sounds fun?!?

I've been wanting to make one for a while. Since seeing one of James Parkers' 3 piece bamboo dragons.  One of my thoughts besides some of the nice hard woods I have (paduak, rosewood, burmese redwood) was to do a riser out of all the buffalo horn scraps I have after cutting out horn plates for the horn bow guys.  I'm thinking of grinding them into slabs and them laminating them together and make a solid horn riser.  That would really be an eye-poppe :or when polished.

well I thought maybe there was a chance this guy was just messing with me and I just got this follow up email from him:

Hey Randy,

I didn't get an email explaining about the bows, but figured that that was what you were going to do with it. I didn't cut them. All are intact. I hope you can laugh at my little joke. Forgive me for messing with your mind. I think we have a case the package will fit into so it should be easy to get to you. I'm guessing there won't be any trouble with it going as luggage. I have received two books that I'll be bringing along as well as some more soccer balls. No room for clothes, so I may be hitting you up for some while there. JK. I have lots of room.
