by now ya'll know i like carving arrow points outta bone.
my personal belief is that bone antler and fire hardened wood
was much more frequently utilized for arrows points than stone by the ancients.
now dont get me wrong i love a finely crafted stone point.
and would love to learn the process myself.
but the largish points i often see(maybe because of state laws)on "modern" primitive arrows
were not likely what you woulda seen on an arrow 400 yrs ago and back
most old "points" found today from ancient times were never intended to be used on an arrow.
but you guys probably already know all this....
soooo, since i cant knap, i carve points outta bone, antler and wood.
heres one im working on right now. a bud and i were talking about  bone points the other day.
he didnt think they would really do the job.
i showed him this one last nite-he agreed he would not wanna be on the receiving end.

That is a sweet point, I made a few out of deer bone and really liked them, the arrow flew great, untill i smashed the point on bricks trying to kill a runaway rooster.

  I carved some from moose antler. It's not properious like deer antler. There's no marrow. I used a dremal they look and work great. Killed bucks and gobblers with mine. They will get a surpizely sharp edge.
  Those are sweet deer antler tips.

have never had the opportunity to access moose antler(tho i lived in maine a cupla yrs and encountered many on logging roads and hiking). have had numerous deer and elk over the years. this particular point was carved outta deer leg bone with modern metal hand files/rasps. it is indeed quite surprising sometimes just how sharp you can get a piece of bone or antler.
this one, tho three sided, would slice ya if you dragged yr finger along the edge. no not wide open like a metal knife, but enough to prove its worth as a penetrating tool.

Awesome point Sadie! I'm a big fan of bone arrow heads also. They are so much easier to make than stone. I still haven't taken a deer with one though. So do you do any kind of heat treating to your arrows heads. I was told by an old guy that used to hunt with them to heat oil up, then let them soak in oil until the oil is cooled down completely. Just wondering if you had ever done anything similar.

i dont see why not tattoo dave. My feeling is that almost everything needs a good coat of oil once in a while.

Cool bone point.  Definitly looks like you should get some penetration with that :o  It looks like it is 3 or 4 sided.

Good looking point. I have to agree with you about the points. Good stone was hard to come by, especially here in the mtns. of WNC. Pretty sure the natives used loads of bone and antler for points, like you said, you're not a knapper, and lots of the NAs weren't either.

aint all this stuff making a lot of fun!

btw scowler-it is 3 sided.

visited with friends a few hrs from here over the weekend.
he sent me home with a box full of deer leg bones and sinew.
(along with  helping me cut a hackberry and a dogwood for bows,
two 10 ft x 3" pieces of bamboo for quivers
and 4 frozen raw deer hides-now i got my work cut out : )

lots of arrow points in all those bones...
gotta love my friends
