cutting cane
« on: January 27, 2012, 02:45:12 pm »
took a little walk down the street to my
buddys backyard and gathered some arrow shafts.
love the inner city life!
eggs from the chickens in the back lot, cane at my buds,
all the rock ya need for wall and walkway building,
plenty o wood for firemaking(and some for bowmaking-lots of hickory and walnut)
bushes for cordage and fiber
squirrels for rawhide and stew
wild turkey roosting close by(sshhhh)
another neighbor lets me tap their pines for pitch.
feral kats keep the mice outta the house
plenty of good old dogs-no one is gonna sneak around here
but in case someone does local laws let ya take em if ya have to
large community garden a blk away-we all work-we all eat
lots of fruit and nut trees in the hood
neighbors who look out for each other
yeah it aint the woods but it'll do for now
ok back to arrow making...

Wish that stuff would grow around here. :-[

thanks bevan-yup life is good as pappy says...

man, that stuff will grow anywhere i swear
in fact i have known numerous folks over the years that truly regretted ever starting it in their yard.
(and their neighbors werent too happy about it either!)
but ya gotta get down and get the root clusters(there is a name that escapes me right now)
if you are serious about growing it on yr own property
they suggest a three foot deep trench filled with concrete all around the area ya want it to grow.

theres lots on the creeks and rivers here too
but so much easier to just walk down the alley

It is MUCH drier and colder in Western Nebraska (15 miles from WY border) than where you are. I would not mind trying some in my back yard (more protected, more water). Where would you get the 'starter'?

EBay has some listed all the time or you can Google bamboo and find nurseries with all kinds of cane and bamboo.  They also have information about where each variety will grow and how to grow it.   Sadie, I didn't know you had a cane patch close to your hideaway .  If you're interested , we might have to do some trading.  I need some 36" cane shafts for the guy that piece of hickory is for.  That is if I can ever get back over there on the right day.   Josh

This is my first time working with bamboo. I just cut some bamboo I found growing at work.  How long should I let it dry before making arrows, or is their a way to speed up the drying process?

If it's not clums it's rhizomes. But sounds like you have it going on, kinda like a commune, but better :)

Bevan, we have river cane everywhere down here.  In the spring when the  new shoots spring up I'll dig some up and send to you if you want to try to grow some.  Just remind me in the spring.
Lineman, I just lay it out in the back of my truck and let it dry in the sun until it turns all the green is gone.  It usually takes a couple of months unless its mid summer then only about a month because of our extreme heat!
Gun Doc, I'm interested in some trading if you need some cane.  It is everywhere on the land I hunt. Just let me know if you want to.

Culms are the shoots(canes) and the rhyzomes are the roots(basically underground shoots).

SADIEJANE I've been thinking of just about doing that for a couple years now. I live on a farm and have quite a few acers. Anyone be willing to send me some.  Pats right the roots are called RHYZOMES. I grow sang and golden seal. The seal also grows from rhyzomes. With seal you can cut the rhyzones 1/2 peices and each one will shoot up a plant. As it grows every couple inchs another plant will come up off it. Tghe solfer the soil the faster and father it runs.
Dose cain grow the same way. I know it grows in WV but not around here. I'd like to give it a try. Anyone willing to trade some rhyzones. I'll make it wort your while. Pm me or email me.
SADIEJANE maybe I'll throw in another dozzen or 2 shafts. If your will to dig me some up.
