Finish help please.
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:38:36 pm »
Hi all,

I have another cherry bow finished and i dont want to loose the colour too much or the lovely grain.
I fancy a shellac finish whi8ch isnt usualy my thing but i think it would help keep a lot of the woods natural beauty.
The question is.. how does this affect TB glues that i will be using to apply a silk backing?
Do i back first or shellac first?

Thanks in advance all.

PS i intend finishing with a wax to seal.

Back with silk first, then shellac.  Or use tru-oil, it does a nice job for grain.

Cherry is one of those woods (like Osage - I've only heard, don't know Osage myself) that will continue to age in the sunlight and get a rich beautiful red-brown color no matter what finish you use on it. Anything with linseed oil in it will age it even faster. Natural colored shellac will add a nice amber color before the aging starts while water-clear shellac is just that.
Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.
