My First Points - Be nice, don't laugh
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:09:15 am »
At least not so's I can hear you.

About a month ago someone gave me a beginner's knapping kit. Great kit, just enough spalls for me to get a taste of the rock. There is something amazing about the sound of the rock clinking.  The spalls were pretty thin and potato chip shaped so I quickly ended up with some very tiny points.

I've also been working with bottle glass. Each material is quite different from the other. Every now and then I manage to get a beautiful flake to pop off just as I saw it in my mind's eye and I try to remember what I did.

I've lost a lot when notching them.

Thanks for looking. Pistachio shell for scale ;)

Don't worry about the size. Those look good. My very , very , very first points were about 1/2 inch long. Give them time & practice , they will grow.

I do not understand how you hold those to push a flake off. My fat fingers would cover the bigest you have posted.
Pretty darn impressive from my view.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

Looks pretty good to me - I guess I will have to find some of my earlier work to put up here. Keep up the good work.
@ Bevan - little one are not as hard as they look.  I make earring size out of flakes.

I would end up trying to push a flake off my fingernail or put the flaker through my finger. :o
