Stuff to learn (experiment) on

I was at one of our big store 'hardware' places yesterday and thought I would just check the Red Oak. I am wanting to learn (experiment) with heat bending & treating. Nothing worth buying in the 3/4" stuff but I could not believe what I found in the 1.5 x 1.5 bin. Two 6 foot pieces with straight grain. Snagged them both. I then looked in the Hickory and found a 1.5" x .75" x 8' sapwood piece with pretty straight grain. Got the whole bunch.
This afternoon I ripped the oak into .75" x 1.5" then cut them to lengths. Hickory is going to be 56" ntn. The RO will be: 60", 62", 64", & 66".
I also finished some culls to tomorrow I am going to start on these. I would like them all to come in @ 27" draw in the 40-45 lb range.

osage and black locust are the only woods i have had luck with dry heat. all the rest I use steam. i always seam to damage white woods. if you have luck with dry heat on oak i would like to hear about it.

The talk around here seems to be, steam for 'green' wood and heat for 'dry' wood. Like I said, experimenting. Also, they are all going to be 'working' handle bows. Something I have wanted to try also.

Nice looking wood, i really like dry heat and oil to bend my bows.

Menards up here is always a sure fire hickory score for me when I need it. Im using less and less steam and more and more dry heat for almost everything. I use steam if the bend is extreme only. I think dry heat would be best for boards.

nice score, could be my eyes but those two on the left look like white oak with the rays and all, or can red oak have similar markings? anyway they look like good peices.

Menards typically has some good stuff.  I wish I could be that lucky too!

SA - It is all Red Oak. The marks are not rays like white but blade marks from the saw.
Pearl - That was the only sapwood hickory in the 'bin'. All the rest was the tan heart wood and I have never had luck with hickory heart wood.


I am going to keep an eye on the stock there. I think they have some RO 10' 1.5x1.5 that might be work buying.

Looks like white oak to me
which I would say is better for making bows than red oak , so either way good job spotting them!
For bending kiln dried wood I use dry heat but put some olive oil on it first so the heat soaks in more ! Have fun !!
