southeast iowa gathering
« on: January 09, 2012, 06:44:20 pm »
A few of us in this area are going to get together this spring so if you are interest in joining us send me a pm and I will try to pick at date that works best.  There are 4 so far interested. We will be doing bow making Flint knapping shooting and one Guy is going to do a tanning demo.  I have Osage out here so can explain a little about how I select the trees I use. Basically just a good time sharing ideas.

Thanks Pappy it should be a lot of fun! I have about 7 interested so when I get a date hammered out I will post it to the calendar of events.   I got a couple hides from my neighbor last night (he head shot both) so we have hides for people to demo on.  So it you live near by send me a PM and I will add you to the list.

Why not get one going yourself? You do not have to be the 'best' at something to host a event like this. Start checking locally and who knows, you might be supprised.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

I was hoping someone coming to the event could do a fire making demo with stick and bow method.  Anyone of you that are coming what to volunteer.

OK here is a little of what is going to be going on at the Mini Ia Jam (lol Ijam sounds dangerous). I am sending people by email pictures of the house and directions so if you need info just PM me and I will send a more complete document.

I  think most people will show up on Saturday between 8 am and 5 pm. I live 6 miles north of Burlington on 40 acres of wooded land with 4 acres of farm fields.

The following are activities that will be going on throughout the day on Saturday.
1.   Flint knapping – pit will be open to all
2.   Brain tanning – this will be an all-day project (beadman)
3.   Bow building  -10 am to cover tree selection, splitting demo, drying, draw knifing, chasing rings, layout, tillering,
4.   Atlatl- demo in the morning and in the afternoon.
5.   Bow demo - target shooting for everyone to watch or participate in after each atlatl demo.
6.   Fire starting (no one identified yet)
7.   Shafting demo – 1 pm to cover materials, fletching, halving, and notching. (who ever steps up)
8.   There will be targets set up in the woods for a primitive shoot
9.            Stringman will be setting up a trade table. You place an item of 25 to 50 dollars value on the table and we will do a drawing at the end of the day for your gift.

If anyone would like to do a demo that would be fine with me, too.

Nothing is set in stone and I'm very flexible about the whole thing. It is my first time putting something together like this and I'd like it to be a group-effort event.
Hotels are 7 miles away or you can pitch a tent.
