toe bone punch

havent been knapping much. heres a piece that ive been working on, dacite. still need to finish it but i wanted to show it because i used a toe bone punch to remove the steep edge i had created trying to set up another series of platforms. the bone punch held up well and didnt need much dressing at all throughout the edge work. i'm going to set one up for notching and see how it holds up compared to antler. the blade was mostly hammer stone but i had to use a tine and billet a couple times to remove some nasty.

Jamie, what we really need is some video lessons on how to make points and blades using all of these cool abo tools.  ;D

thanks guys. the punch is a deer toe and justin after the holidays im going to start making some vids finally. bushman i use either a rock or a billet to strike the end of the punch. punches work great for just about any aspect of knapping but really comes in handy with thinning or working a bad edge when the piece is near completion. it allows you to focus as much as energy as you need into an area that would normally be tough to hit precisely with regular percussion. or if pressure flaking just isnt providingthe  force needed to remove a blemish or stubborn platform. once you learn to isolate platforms and the angle the punch properly you will be amazed at what can be done.

Punch work is awsome once ya figer it out, takes a lot of practice like Jamie said ya got to have the plateforms and angle just right.
I Was doing a lot back when i was makeing those danish daggers, it was like learning how to knap all over again.
 I'll use them now from time to time really opens some doors on a stubborn rock.

Pardon Sir,

One more question or two about the Deer Toe Bone punch.
Is the bone just dried naturally?
I'm guessing that you would want the full hardness of Raw bone?

the bone is air dried. moist bone shatters to easy so it must be dried. i will see if i can take a few pics today or maybe a quick vid later today. thanks again
