Yew ELB w/ horn nocks
« on: December 08, 2011, 06:39:11 pm »
The second bow I've been working on. (Here in Iowa we have a maddening break in the deer bow season for shotgun hunters. Two weeks when we cannot hunt with bows.) Its also for my friend who wants period ELB's with no dress up. The horn nocks are function and period correct. This one 67" ntn 50# @ 27" with TruOil finish.

Thanks Druid for the "on a post" photo method which I shamelessly appropriated.

Sorry pics a little dark at this is my failing back up camera.

OK some more details and pics. This yew was harvested in Ohio - yes Ohio! - from an old nursery that was being cleared for construction. Yew is a common landscape planting bush and when it drops seeds they revert to tree form. 4" trunk split into quarters on the band saw.

There was some propeller twist which I partially removed with dry heat. Some remains but I ignored it and set the nocks in alignment.

Sap wood was a nice 1/4 to 5/16 so I left it and some of the character under the bark.

Not much for making horn nocks, so I get them from Terry. I do some reshaping and added the stringer nock on the top tip.

Simply beautiful, Shaun! The braces pic and full draw are almost too perfect.  8)   Very nice bow.

Ohio Yew. Now there are two words that I never imagined I'd see together! Beautiful piece of wood and a beautiful bow.
