Are scroll saws good when it comes to bows?
« on: December 25, 2011, 02:04:47 pm »
Is it okay to use a scroll saw to work on a bow? I would be cutting osage and hickory, 5/8" thick. Just wondering  ;)

I don't own a scroll saw, but I believe they're used for complex detail work, yes? I can't imagine how you could use it for bow making. I don't think it would work like a bandsaw.

I don't own a scroll saw either.  I think you will find a bandsaw would be better for bowmaking.  I use mine all the time.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

I do not think a scroll saw blade would be much good against an Osage stave. I had trouble with a 12"/.75 hp bandsaw on some wood.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

Hmm. It's worth a shot...  :) Or should I use my block plane instead. (I'm trying to taper it)

No. The blades are too small and break real easy. I use mine occasionaly to cut tip overlays.

As we say in Spanish... Noh! Unfortanately I know from experience. I tried and it gouged my piece of wood and I broke lots of blades. I bet you could pick up a decent bandsaw right now on craigslist.
