52'' hickory staves

I have two 52'' hickory staves cut last year. Are they long enough to make two bows or should I splice? Thanks, Eric.

what do you want out of the bow?

52" would be a 26" max draw if bending through the handle with a D bow 20" max with a 6 inch non bending handle area.  That is with a perfect tiller. All depends on what you what for your bow. If you need more draw then splice is a must.

Make yourself a nice, wide flatbow. Say about 66" long. Keep the cut-off ends for handle sections on future bows. I like to add hickory or osage handles to lighter physical weight whitewood bows.

There are some pretty sweet bows in Hamm & Allely's Encyclopedia #1.  I'm recalling one, I think Mohegan, about that length, D bow, recurved tips and flat back and belly but with angled sides to form a sort of squashed hexagon.  I always thought that would make a nice bow.

That's long enough for a 26" draw with a stiff handle if you sinew back it.  If you are very careful to avoid hinges while tillering, take your time, you can pull this off.  I'd recommend flipping the tips a bit before sinewing just to improve the string angle a bit and make the draw more comfortable.

I am shooting a short osage now with a 25'' draw, starting to realy like shorter bows and shorter draw.
