Sunday Spall Reduction (Super Pic Heavy)
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:36:00 pm »
Well I was lucky enough to spend a little time in the pit with Jesse (leapingbare) yesterday. I learn so much every time I get to watch him and usually end up with some waste flakes to go home with...WELL yesterday he worked a couple huge rocks and made two HUGE bifaces that he threw in my bucket to finish up! OMG! THANKS AGAIN JESSE  ;D Along with the bifaces I got a few good spalls and sat down this morning to work on one of the better KY blue ones. I thought Id take some pics along the way. I ended up with a pretty nice blade Ill probably haft up later today.. ;) WEll here it goes. Starting with the spall using freehand percussion with a copper bopper.

That was a little pic heavy Will but i enjoyed every one of em :). You certainly tamed that spall down - looks great! That Jesse now i tell ya, they just don't make em like him very often..

Will, You are so lucky to get to knap with Jesse, truly an artist with stone. I usually get to knap just once a year with Jesse an Shannon at the classic. I have one of those huge dacitite preforms that jesse made for me an the wrote a personal note on it I laugh every time I see it. I t says "Bob thin the ends first an the middle last" I like your pics o f the spalls to a finished blade they look real good. Later Bob
