Yep, been there. That's why I don't rely on visual tillering cues anymore. With the wood that we tend to favor it's too easy to work down an area that look's "stiff" but really isn't. As for the bow breaking, I know how you feel. I had one explode in my hand last week while taking a full draw picture of the final product. And right in front of a friend no less - awkward. I've learned that if you're serious about making wooden bows you can't get too attached these things.
