Arrow rest ideas for working handle bows???
« on: November 08, 2011, 10:15:14 pm »
I have one in the works right now and I plan on using a leather wedge as an arrow rest/shelf.  Nothing too big, but just enough for the arrow.  I thought leather would be the way to go because it will have some give and will flex with the handle.  If anyone has any experience or advice on this, I would appreciate it.  Also, if any of you have pics of the arrow rests/shelves you have incorporated into a working handle bow, that would be great. Thanks.

Stacked saddle leather is my favorite. You can put a roll or two at the top of your grip leather to form a shelf area. I have two bendy bows with that type.

I use a floppy rest on most of my bows any more. They almost all bend a bit in the handle at full draw.

I carve a small rest out of a small block of wood or a golf tee. Here's a picture of one on a bendy handle vine maple bow.

Looks nice Gordon, thanks for the pic.  If I use wood and keep it small like that, is there any worry about it popping off since the handle bends?

Somthing that small i think there is very little chance of it coming off. Even it it dose it dose not really matter as the handle wrap will keep it on.

If the rest was on the back or belly of the bow it would have a chance of coming off because of the movement of the wood(stretching and compressing) when the bow is drawn. There is very little movement along the sides so the rest should adhere well and remain that way on the sides of the bow.

I've made a lot of bendy handle bows this way and have never had a rest pop off.

I glue leather scraps together, then shape them down to a wedge and cut a horizontal slit in the leather wrap, stretch slightly with file end and insert the wedge added with a few drops of super glue
