Hickory flatbow

Here is a Mockernut hickory I recently finished. I had built 4 bows from the same tree as this one,heat treated them all,and every one of them developed stress fractures,including one that had made a trip to Bob Moon out in California,(then home again  :P). I still have 2 more roughed out staves from this tree,so,beginning with this one ,I opted not to heat treat any of them,and so far no problems. It's funny,but ,until this particular tree,I have never had a stress fracture in hickory,of any kind. This bow is 64 3/4 '' tip to tip, 63 1/4" nock to nock.  1 3/8" at the fades with an even taper to 3/8" nocks. 49#@26",walnut stain, with osage overlays.Dyed cane grip. God Bless

Man, that stain job sure brought out the grain.  That's perty! :D  Can I make a request?  I'd like to see your cane grip better, any chance I could talk you into a close up pic of that?       Josh

That's what I like to see. Pete you turn out a real nice bow and for my money hickory is hard to beat. Been mulling over tip overlays all day and finally understood when I saw yours. Thank you.

That sure is a nice bow. Love that grain. Do you have hickory out in your neck of the woods?

Do you think the checking is due to the insane heat and dry weather we had?

Thank you fellas.  Josh,I will get a pic of the handle up as soon as I can.(I might have to wait for one of my kids to come over and fix it for me).I Tried last night,but having trouble getting my pictures on Picasa,which I usually use. When I import from my camera they go to" ib"  ?.Any Ideas how to get rid of  this" ib" ? Cipriano,we do have hickory in E. Texas. Although,I dont have it growing on my place,so I cant be too picky.  The problems with this tree are not related to the conditions of this summer.It was cut 2 years ago. The tree looked very healthy when cut,but not all wood is perfect I suppose. Thanks again everyone. God Bless

Josh,till I can get a pic posted of the handle,check out the "osage bow" I posted Oct. 15.The handle shape and dyed cane is nearly identical to this one, God Bless
