War bow shooting.
« on: October 17, 2011, 12:38:32 am »
I dusted off the war bow today, because it was such a beautiful fall day. I'm shooting my 100# tri-lam, with 1/2" birch shafted arrows, weighing 68-70 grams.
As you can see, if I puff out my cheeks, I can get 'er back to full draw!

After a bit of warm up, I was able to get an honest 200 yards, which was my goal. My dog Thor thinks it's lots of fun!!

If you haven't already guessed, I'm shootig on a golf course driving range which is closed for the season. A perfect place to flight shoot with a war bow! I was actually trying to hit the 200 yard marker, and I got to within a couple of yards a few times!

"Cry havoc! and loose the dog's of war!"  Get'em Thor!

No wonder you got the driving range to yourself!

That looks kinda like fun!  I wonder what ranges you could get if you had a spotter with a sight level set at 45 degrees to tell you when to fire the arrow off?
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

That looks fun, I think there is something to be said for archery gold, perhaps a target 500 yards away first shot flight second shot rove and the last shot target.
ALways happy to help anyone get into heavy weight archery: https://www.facebook.com/bostonwarbowsbows/

The penetration of that arrow is amazing. Looks like about 2/3 of the arrow is burried.  That would definately go through an armoured rider, the saddle and into his steed.  200yards with a 3 ounce arrow is quite good, I would think.  You could probably set up a seat for Thor on the arrow and let him take flight with the arrow.  ;)

Thanks, Pat! Yes, the ground wasn't frozen, and the arrow was sinking quite far into the soft grass... probably about half the shaft was buried.
200 yards is good with a 70 gram arrow. I was happy with that.

Great pic's Adam, never thought about shooting at the driving range. I just made some fir arrows using the planer board from John Strunk. They are heavy suckers that I was curious to see how they fly. Thanks for the reminder.
