Found in Yosemite
« on: October 22, 2011, 10:39:34 pm »
A visitor found this in June in Yosemite and brought it back to the park. Looks like gray obsidian verging on dacite. Some sources state that obsidian and dacite were found in the same flows. check out the ribboning!

Looks like all the percussion scars were erased w/ pressure flakes. Very nice learning piece.  Nice tip also . Wonder if that person got their kiester jumped on for picking it up on public land?

NICE FLAKE SCARS!!  I can't say that I'd have been so honest.  I had a buddy doing some work in the state park and he found a real nice point, he showed it to a dnr ranger and the guy took it from him.  Glad that fella brought it back for the rest of us to see though.  Thanks for sharing.

@Tower - If someone turns it in we don't usually hassle them.  We have had folks years later turn in tiny little flakes that they picked up here in Yosemite. No curses like the rocks from Hawaii!  We can ask the Archaeological staff after they are done with it to use it in the museum as a model.  I have yet to reach that level of flaking. I am still working on successful thinning.
