So I'm sitting up in a tree for the PA opener saturday evening, thinking that this is the 2nd full season with my first & only homemade bow (red oak board bow), and darn it, I didnt need to put that linen backing on it. I really really like plain wood, but I grudgingly listened to those who know what they're doing and backed it.
Good thing. Because this afternoon when I shot my practice arrow after getting situated, I noticed the top limb raising a big sliver (or whatever you call it).
Thanks guys, for sharing your expertise.

Bad timing though, now I need to turn that hickory stave in the garage into a bow by 6am. Well, asap anyway. My wife says I should just use my 35 year old bear recurve (the only other bow I ever owned), but as much as I like that bow it just doesnt seem right.  Gonna start on the hickory tomorrow.

And now the question... do I need to back a hickory bow made from a stave?  Planning on a simply pyramid bow.

from a stave, no, hickory is actually used as a backing for bows, so it should be more forgiving

When I saw the title, I thought this was going to be a negative post.  Glad to see its not.  There are some very knowledgeable bowyers on here.  They have sure helped me out.

Yeah, I realized afterwards that the title sounded  negative, I'd change it if I could.  Things dont always come out the way I mean them.  What I meant was the guys who do actually know everything about building bows, as opposed to me who knows nothing.  And yes my intent was to express genuine appreciation for good advice that I followed even though I didnt want to.

Take the bear hunting!!! Take your time on the hickory,id be proud to get one with any single string.no sense in rushing ;)
