Elder mother 50# 30"
« on: October 05, 2011, 12:07:40 pm »
Old legend said that in every elder tree there is good guardian, Elder mother. Having elder wood with you helps Elder mother to keep evil witches and ghosts away from you....
This should be special bow for my dear friend Vesna. I wanted to make some "magical" to her and I deicided it to be elder wood. I haven't work with elder wood before. I was suspicious but this wood is great- hard, strong, easy to work, compression strong, like some old bone under touch. This supposed to be very accurate bow so I choose narrow sapling of elder. It is just 1 x 1" in the handle. It is 66" ntn. Having little twist and character in the outer limbs but not much. I scraped out its spoongy core form one limb and it is still very strong limb- holding on two narrow wooden walls (you will see on pics what I am talking about). After sending it is hypnotical on the touch. Sapling had 1" of deflex in the middle of the stave and took more 3/5 of set, total is 1 3/5, without heat treating. Draw weight is 50# at 30" but it will be pulled little shorter. Nocks are made of juniper heart- one more magical recipe- it is said that juniper heart is reppelent to bears and wolwes. I hope she would like this bow.

Beautiful! I agree with johnston, that is a very evocative bow. I think your friend will love the bow. It has female all over it.
Druid- I noticed you put the tassel end at the top and the loop at the bottom on your bows. I have always done it the other way but I think I will
change to Druid style because I like the way it looks. Could tie a feather to it or something. What do you use for string material? I was also wondering if the frayed part of the loop end could act like a string silencer if there was more fray in that area. See what a big influence you are to people on the other side of the world through your sharing! O:)

Another great bow!  I have been inspired by your bows, and put aside a sugar maple branch this past spring with the intention imitating one of your bows.  Keep them coming!

nice bow,  your bows have definitely made me look at saplings more as bow wood , i havent had much luck with them they seem to always  lift splinters at the crown . whats the trick? what is the groove on the belly for?
