Is the stave green?  If if has been cut for a while you should be OK not sealing the back of hickory. I prefer to use shellac for sealing because it is so easy to remove when needed. Just wipe it with alcohol and it will remove the shellac. With paint you will have a hard time getting it off of your stave.

yes the stave is green. i will get shellac tomorrow and try.  i just cut a bunch of hickory staves and want to make sure i get the bark off and do the right thing for them so i don't lose any like i did with wood worms last year.  thanks for the replies. will let everyone know how things are going.
