Tried any of these ?
« on: September 19, 2011, 11:58:57 am »
I have been bushhogging on the farm lately,I usuall leave some fields each year for cover for the rabbits and birds ,then the next year cut them and leave some others,well I left some last year and was cutting them Friday,they both were loaded with 2nd year growth  Wild Cherry/Sassafras/ and shoemake,they were nice and straight and about 11/32 to 1/2 inch.I cut a few of each to see how they season out,just wondered if anyone has tried any of these,if they work I can get thousands every other year.  :) :)

Pappy, you may remember I'm not that far from you and new to the area? What's shoemake? Wild guess, maybe sumac? Anyway, haven't tried any of those for arrows, but I'm sure some members have. Jawge makes shoot arrows and arrows from multiflora rose.

Wild cherry and sassafras make excellent arrows Pappy. Got a first year stand of sassafras growing along my drive that's looking awful tempting. Hope they make it until end of next growing season. Probably going to get mowed down by the wife once it starts snowing >:(......Art

   The cherry and sassafras I used each both make good arrows. I liked the sassafras the best.The shoemac is to solf and brittle. I like to wait untill winter when the saps down.
  Let me know if you'd like to trade for some dog wood this winter.

I'vetried cherry shoots but had trouble keeping them straight. Other than that they seemed to make good, heavy shafts. I think sumac is pretty brittle but never tried it as shafting.

Hey Pappy, you can make a good beverage from the red pods of the Staghorn Sumac and sip on it while you make your sassafras arrows.

Warning;
The big sumac bush with red pods is not the lower growing poisonous sumac plant that usually grows along the water drainage's.

if any of the shoots are to big for normal arrows, they might work for my warbows if you can't find any other uses

  I've never try shoemac tea but have drank sassafrass tea a few times. It's and aquirred tast though. Know a guy that makes it regurely and when ever he pops in to talk bows or bucks he'll bring me a quart. He also ads ginsang and some time perment when he can find it.
  I like it and look forward to seeing him. So much I make my own once in a while. I like to ad a few tea bags to mine. Sweeten to tast.
  Shoemac I have big winter stands I planted. The pods and a late winter time food scorce around here. I'll ask my friend he's into the herbable thing.
