mini crossbow
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:33:28 pm »
ok, i was boars this weekend, and well, hurricane irene took down a cherry, there was nothing long enough to make even a shortbow, but in my boredom, i got the idea to make a mini crossbow, so i found a good log, split it into quarters, got 2 good sections with few knots so i grabed the best and took it down to the size i needed and them let the heat gun go crazy, it was so small i was able to dry it pretty quickly with the aid of my microwave( don't worry, i would never try that with a bow). after that i took the other pice got i close to a square shape and finished it on the table saw, and took it down to what the stock is now. i then macked the bow with part of an old sheet, hemp rope i pulled apart, and then wrapped it in hemp rope, all soaked in titebond 2
now i know this is usually the part where i tell you about the draw length and weight, but i want to see what peoples guesses are ;) see who can come closest
i will tell you though that the prod is about 15inches
good luck guessing
noel ;)

ok, once i post the weight( don't want to give any hints with how i draw it ;))
ill try to explain it, what i did was cut a notch onto the stock, with a hole positioned where when a dowel is inserted, it can be pushed up, lifting the string of the ridge

By the looks of the (nylon ?) string I would say there is some stretch even at 6 inches. #30-35# would be my guess.

its actually fastflight, but it does look like nylon, its only that thick tho to make it less prone to splitting

Is the 'average' weight for a cross bow around 80# ? I don't recall ever shooting one.

Nice one :).
A good target crossbow and a primitive crossbow are on my fun list, but then there's about 100 other things on there too.
I think these quick fun projects teach us a lot about the materials we use.
