The old Dutch plug trick and backing strip of hickory.  If you get a good glue line this should work.  Good advice randman, I now happily contradict my prior advice!

I put a piece of hickory ramrod in after filing it out for a snug fit . Wetted hole up good with TBIII , wetted plug and pushed it in . Had a little gap around plug on one side so I slid a sliver of osage around it and tapped it in . It looked good this morn so i trimmed it off . Floor tillered for now until I can find a backing strip :)

  Found a piece of the hickory I trimmed from making a gunstock and ran off a couple 1/4" strips then ran through planer to 1/8".
 Having never done this I scratched the contact surfaces up some with a sawzall blade, wiped down with denatured alcohol, dried , wet both surfaces good with TBIII and clamped up with a stiff backer above backing strip to flatten it out good. 12 C-clamps holding it all together. Ill leave it until morning and see how it looks .
 I think Ill add a 1/4" Walnut overlay on the lap joint. I read that here someplace .

Thanks for the input on this thread and my other one concerning backing strips :) Perhaps I can save this puppy yet !

Heres a pic of glue up and dang near every clamp I own except for the 10" , 12" and pony clamps :)

I checked TB website and they recommended 24 hrs clamp time for stressed joints so Im waiting ...........................

And here with backing trimmed and filed down. Glue line turned out pretty good I think :) I have a backing splice overlay of 1/4" oak gluing to it now . I think Ill let it rest for a few days before I continue on .
Hope I can get it worked down to a 40-45# shooter !

What ..............your trees stay put ?

The chain was to hook my 4wheeler winch to and straighten cable out . Then I left it and started hookin my Beagle Buddy on a rope to it when I was out front. If I turn him loose I might never see him again ! He follows his hyper nose !

Been following this, thanks for shareing the pics and progress with us, I am glad you decided to try backing it, I wouldnt want to give up on it and as you said we all learn allot from it. Thanks again! and good luck, look forward to seeing more progress!

Whew ! About got it floor tillered again after removing about 3/32" wood from both limb bellies with spoke shave and scraper. Didnt trust myself with the bandsaw being the limbs are shaped now . Still pretty stiff feeling . Need to get outer 1/3 of limbs working a tad more and I can get started with long string . Appears to be bending smooth through the 'dutch plug' area. ;D

No love !!!!!!! She blew up just above knot while exercising limbs on the stick ! First for me an got me ol ticker thumpin  ;D What the heck ! It can be glued together for a pattern Or sawn off at handle at broken limb and used for a saurkraut tampin stick !
Either way it got my attention  :D ;)
