Another maple board bow (not for BOM)
« on: August 22, 2011, 11:46:32 pm »
Hey guys, I just wanted to share some pics of this bow I finally finished up.  I had posted the early stages of this bow in another thread when it was supposed to be my trade bow, but ended up too light. (http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,25939.0.html).  Anyway, it ended up at 35# @ 28".  Turns out a guy I work with is looking for a lighter bow, so I finished this off for him.

It's rawhide backed, and about 67" ntn.  I used some mahogany leather antiquing gel on the rawhide to give it some color, which kinda matched the color of the purpleheart in the handle and tips.  This one took about 1" of set, I think because I worked the inner limbs a little too hard early in the tillering.  I had fun with the tips on this one and made them narrower than my previous bows.  I left them thicker to begin with, and when the tillering was done, I was surprised at how much wood kept coming off without them starting to bend.

I might add a shelf and handle wrap yet, depending what my buddy wants.  Anyway, here's the pics:

Hi Cam,
Really like the look of the stained raw hide backing, and your tips look fantastic.  Way to go.

That's an awesome bow.  Love the contrast between the woods and the stained rawhide, and the tips are killer.

Thanks a lot guys :)  I spent the better part of an afternoon just finishing those tips off.  And then while shooting it in, I was trying out a really loose grip and had the bow jump out of my hands.  Had to retouch the lower tip after that  ::)  I was pretty happy with the way that gel antique stain turned out.  I found that after putting a base layer on, I could randomly streak some more on and let it set up a bit before wiping it of, and it left a cool pattern that looked similar to a wood grain effect.

Dave, give me a shout next time you're around, I'd love to go shooting.  There's not much summer left - I just noticed yesterday how many leaves are turning yellow already!

Thanks Adam and Ken.  I enjoy the tillering process, but thinking about what to do for the finishing touches and then bringing it all together is the part I really love (not that there`s anything fancy about this one).

Awesome.  Nice bow.
