The market hunting to supply mounts for places like Wall Drug and Cabelas has nearly wiped them out on the upper Great Plains.
In the past bucks would spar with each other for breeding the does but now the population has so many does and so few bucks that the doe jackalopes have become almost predatory in their breeding season. Doe jackalopes have been known to fight to the death over breeding age bucks here in South Dakota. This tends to cause the jack-bucks to loose all ability to sustain...erm, that is to acheive...uh, you know. This has only caused lower breeding success and lower numbers. Sad, really.
